This rig became popular in South Africa and New Zealand and is fast becoming the rig of choice for land based game fishing off the beaches, piers and rocks across Australia. If you have ever tried to cast a large live or dead bait you will know it doesn't go far due to wind resistance and "tumbling" of the bait as your cast. The other drama with casting large baits is the trauma caused to your livey when it hits the water will probably stun it or maybe even kill it, and that's not ideal when your trying to live-bait!
The Wiggle ya Worm Slide Bait rig allows you to put BIG healthy live and dead baits out further than ever before with pinpoint accuracy into the deep waters past the surf line where the BIG fish are!
Although it make look a bit wierd at first, the methodology is pretty simple. If you have ever cast out with just a sinker on you know how far it goes! Imagine getting a full mullet or live tailor out that far! Thats what this rig offers you.
SLIDE RIG BASICS:
1. CASTOUT YOUR GRAPNEL/BREAKAWAY SINKER AS FAR AS YOU CAN!
2. GENTLY JERK YOUR ROD SO THE SINKER SETS IN THE SAND
3. USE A ROD HOLDER AND WIND IN A LITTLE TO GET THE LINE TIGHT
4. BAIT UP YOUR SLIDE RIG, UNCLIP IT AT THE SPRING AND ATTACH IT TO YOUR MAIN LINE THOUGH THE SPRING
5. DON’TFORGET TO CLIP THE SLIDE RIG BACK ON!
6. SLIDETHE RIG/BAIT DOWN YOUR MAIN LINE INTO THE WATER
7. USING A “FLICKING” “MINI STRIKING" ACTION TO MOVE THE ONE WAY SLIDE RIG DOWN THE LINE TO THE SINKER (MAKE SURE YOU GO ALL THE WAY TO THE STOPPER RING)
8. LOOSEN YOUR DRAG!!!!!!
9. YOU NOW HAVE A BIG BAIT OR LIVEY IN AMONGST THE BIG ONES
10. GET READY TO HANG ON!
BAIT-UP, SLIDE IN & HANG ON!
How to attach your Slide Bait Rig to your mainline, Don't forget to clip it back on once fitted!!
There are 2 basic slide rig versions, weighted & unweighted. Which type you use depends on a couple of factors but BOTH Slide Rig versions will work in any conditions with live or dead baits. The theory behind it is that a live bait will swim down to your sinker easier with an UNWEIGHTED Slide rig, the WEIGHTED Slide rig works well for dead baits and when the tide is rough and incoming because it makes it harder for the rig to return back up the line due to the extra tension provided by the weight on the slide.
It may take a couple of minutes to get your bait out to the stopper ring and by the time you get it there you're arms will probably be hanging off! But it is not unusual to catch 40kg plus Spanish with this set-up.(No pain no Gain!) PS. Make sure you don't give up and go half way or there is a good chance you will have a "burn-off" as your fish runs off and the slide rubs against your mainline. Not everyone does but we always use a stronger leader for the last 3m or so to help prevent burn offs. This leader should be tied to your main line using an FG Knot so the slider can easily pass the knot on it's way to the stopper ring. Another good tip is to use some weaker line between your grappnel sinker and the stopper ring. If your sinker gets snagged this weaker line will snap and you won"t lose your top quality Wiggle ya Worm Slide Bait Rig :)
