Slide baiting is a fishing technique designed to present large baits naturally and long distances from the shore, making it especially effective for big fish such as sharks, gummy sharks, jewfish, GTs, and other powerful predators.
Rather than casting a heavy baited rig, slide baiting allows the sinker and mainline to be set first, with the bait then slid down the line to the fishing zone. This approach improves bait presentation, reduces resistance when fish pick up the bait, and allows larger baits to be used further out than would normally be possible to where the big fish are, with confidence.
On this page, we explain how slide bait rigs work, common problems associated with slide baiting, and how the right components — including purpose-built slide bait trolleys, complete pre-rigged systems, and anti burn-off stoppers — can dramatically improve reliability and hook-up success.
Whether you’re new to slide baiting or refining your setup for bigger fish, understanding the mechanics behind the system is key to getting consistent results.

Slide baiting works by separating the sinker and mainline from the baited hook trace, allowing the bait to move freely down the line to the fishing zone with minimal resistance using a slide trolley
The process starts by casting or setting the sinker and mainline first. If you have ever cast out with just a sinker, you'll know how far it goes, this set-up allows you to put big live and dead baits further than ever before. Once the line is anchored and under tension, the baited rig is attached and slid down the line using a slide bait trolley. Gravity, line angle, flicking the rod with mini strikes and water movement move the bait down to the sinker position. The non-return slide trolley design incrementally moves the slide down the mainline to the stopper, where it sits naturally in the strike zone.
Slide Bait Rig vs Slide Bait Trolley
A slide bait rig refers to the complete pre-rigged fishing setup. This includes the leader, slide trolley, hook arrangement, and any bite protection built into the rig. Our pre-rigged wire slide bait rigs use a two-hook system — one fixed hook and one sliding snelled hook and are available in different hook sizes to suit larger baits and fish.
A slide bait trolley is the stainless-steel wire mechanism that runs along the mainline. Its job is to carry the baited rig smoothly down the line toward the sinker. The trolley itself does not catch the fish — it simply delivers the bait to where it needs to be.
Both components work together as part of the slide baiting system, but they serve very different roles.
Why Slide Baiting Is Used for Big Fish
Slide baiting is commonly used when targeting large, powerful fish because it allows:
Because of these advantages, slide baiting is widely used for sharks, gummy sharks, jewfish, GTs, and other hard-fighting species where confidence and bait presentation matter.
One of the most common failure points in slide baiting is what fishos refer to as a burn-off.
A burn-off occurs when a slide bait trolley is allowed to travel back up the mainline under load. As the trolley moves against the line — especially under tension from swell, current, or a moving fish — friction builds rapidly. Over time, this heat and abrasion can weaken the mainline and, in some cases, cut it entirely.
This failure often happens:
Because the sinker is fixed and the bait is free-moving, uncontrolled trolley travel creates a friction point on the mainline. Once the line begins to heat or abrade, failure can occur without warning.
Burn-offs are frustrating because:
Many fishos accept burn-offs as “part of slide baiting”, but in reality they’re a mechanical problem caused by uncontrolled movement, not bad luck.
Understanding why burn-offs happen is the first step toward preventing them.
Burn-offs aren’t caused by bad knots or weak line — they’re caused by uncontrolled slide movement. To prevent this, the slide bait system needs a positive stopping point that physically halts the trolley before friction can occur.
The Wiggle ya Worm anti burn-off stopper was developed specifically to address this failure point.
Unlike improvised knots or beads that can slip under load, this stopper is designed to engage and lock the slide bait trolley in position once it reaches the stopper. When the trolley is engaged on the stopper, it can no longer travel back up the mainline, eliminating the friction zone that leads to line burn and failure.
This controlled stopping point:
The goal isn’t to add complexity — it’s to control movement where it matters most. By managing where the trolley stops, the system remains stable even under swell, current, or fish movement.
Anti burn-off stoppers are used as part of a complete slide baiting system, whether you’re running standalone slide bait trolleys or complete pre-rigged slide bait rigs. They address a known weakness in slide baiting and help turn a high-risk failure point into a controlled, repeatable setup.

Burn-offs happen when a trolley is allowed to travel back up the mainline under load, creating friction that can weaken or cut the line.
Our anti burn-off stoppers are purpose-built to prevent that by engaging and locking the slide onto the stopper, stopping it from riding back up the line and eliminating that friction point.
If you’re slide baiting in swell/current, fishing long soak times, or targeting powerful fish, preventing burn-offs is a reliability upgrade worth building into the system.
This short 27-second video shows exactly how easy it is to attach a Wiggle ya Worm slide bait rig to your mainline. There are no complicated knots, no special tools, and no confusing steps — just a quick, secure connection that’s ready to fish.

This photo shows one of our Weighted Pre-Rigged slide bait rigs. The rig uses premium nylon-coated stainless steel wire, a heavy 220lb rolling swivel, and a purpose-built stainless steel slide trolley fitted with a luminous compression bead. All wire connections are double-crimped and protected with heat-shrink for long-term durability. It’s a simple, mechanically reliable system built in Queensland for beach, rock and surf fishing where big baits, big runs, and big fish are the goal.

yA trolley pack gives you flexibility to match the conditions on the day by mild your own trace, or fish a complete pre-rigged system — and whether conditions call for a weighted or unweighted slide.
Slide Bait Trolley Pack (1 weighted + 1 unweighted)
This option is ideal if you already have your own leader/trace setup sorted and want a reliable way to send a bait down your mainline.
Complete Pre-Rigged Slide Bait Rigs (wire, 2-hook)
If you want a ready-to-fish option with bite protection built in, complete pre-rigged slide bait rigs remove the guesswork.
These rigs use a two hook setup:
They are available in:
This style is designed for sliding larger baits and targeting bigger fish where a sliding hook helps position the hook closer to the bite zone.
Quick guide: which should you choose?
Slide baiting is most effective when the system is used in the correct sequence. Keeping your setup simple and mechanical is the key to reliable results.
Basic slide baiting workflow:
Because the bait is never cast with the sinker, it arrives in the water looking natural rather than battered from impact (great for live baits). This makes slide baiting a favourite technique for big-bait fishos fishing from shore or in deeper water.
Expansion opportunities for your setup:
Each of these adjustments lets you refine the technique without adding unnecessary complication.
If you already use slide baiting, this page serves as a quick reference. If you’re new to it, the image panels and videos you’ll find on this page show exactly how simple the technique can be.
If you’re still unsure about any part of slide baiting or need help with a specific scenario, we’re always happy to help you choose or tune the right setup. Confidence and presentation catch more fish than luck ever will.
